As one of three "Greenbelt Communities" built by the federal government during the 1930s, Greenhills is surrounded by parkland and trees. Nearly 4,000 residents inhabit 1,660 homes, with many families
including third and fourth generation descendants from original "pioneers." Several unique housing units are available in the village. The original government-built area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Much of the local retail activity is centered in historic Greenhills Shopping Center. More than 1,100 people find employment in the village working for such diverse employers as Winton Woods City Schools, Mobilcomm Technologies and Alois Alzheimer Center. Greenhills has a strong recreation program operating a nine-hole par-three executive golf course and an outdoor pool, both open to the public. Youth sports are sponsored year-round by the Greenhills-Winton Sports Association. The Greenhills Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Post 530, Greenhills Woman's Club, Kiwanis and several scouting, church, gardening, civic and senior clubs are among the many volunteer organizations serving Greenhills residents.

The law regarding dangerous and vicious dogs in Greenhills has changed!
A dangerous dog is a dog that, without provocation, has chased or approached in a menacing fashion or attitude of attack, or has threatened or attempted to bite or otherwise endanger any person while off the premises and not under reasonable control of its owner, keeper or harborer, or not physically restrained or appropriately confined.
Owners, keepers, or harborers of dangerous dogs must do the following:
• When on the premises of the owner, keeper or harborer, the dog must be securely confined at all times.
• When off the premises of the owner, keeper or harborer, the dog must be kept on a chain-link leash or tether - not more than 6 feet in length, and must be kept in a locked enclosure which has a top, or have the leash or tether controlled by a person who is of suitable age and discretion or securely attach, tie or affix the leash or tether to the ground or a stationary object and station a person who is of suitable age in close proximity to the dog so as to prevent it from causing injury to any person; or muzzle the dog.
• Obtain liability insurance in the amount of $100,000 for any damage, or injury to, or death of a person caused by the dangerous dog.
Violators will be considered guilty of a misdemeanor of the fourth degree on a first offense and a misdemeanor of the third degree on each subsequent offense. The court may order the offender to personally supervise the dangerous dog, order the dangerous dog to complete dog obedience training, or both. The court may also choose to order the dangerous dog to be permanently removed from Greenhills or humanely destroyed by a licensed veterinarian. The offender may also be ordered to pay the Village’s costs of handling and confining the dog, if those measures are necessary.
A vicious dog is a dog that has, without provocation, has killed or caused injury to any person, or has killed another dog.
Vicious dogs are not permitted in Greenhills; they must be immediately removed from the Village.
A violation of the vicious dog law is a misdemeanor of the first degree on a first offense. The court may order the vicious dog to be permanently removed from the Village or humanely destroyed. The offender may also be ordered to pay the Village’s costs of handling and confining the dog, if those measures were necessary.
The Village of Greenhills has the authority to determine if a dog qualifies as a dangerous or vicious dog and will give notice to the owner, keeper or harborer by regular mail or in person or both, of such a determination.
To appeal this determination, a hearing can be requested in writing within 10 days of receiving the determination.
